Victoria Falls, through local eyes
How to pack smart, explore deeply, and fall head over heels for the Smoke That Thunders
If Victoria Falls is on your travel list, we’ll save you the hesitation — go. There’s nowhere else on earth quite like it. As a family-run lodge just upriver from this mighty wonder, we’re lucky enough to call this corner of the world home. And even after all these years, the Falls still stop us in our tracks.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, we’ve put together our personal guide to making the most of your time there — from what to pack and where to go, to the little things that make the biggest difference.
Where we are
Zambezi Dusk sits about 30 minutes from Victoria Falls (on the Zambian side), just outside the vibrant town of Livingstone. We’re close enough for day trips and spontaneous visits, but far enough to swap the crowds for calm. So after a day at the edge of the world, you can be back on the river with a sundowner in hand, watching the sky melt into gold.

How to see victoria falls like a local
See both sides (if you can)
Zambia and Zimbabwe share the Falls — and both bring something magical to the table. Zimbabwe offers wide, panoramic views. Zambia delivers thrilling, up-close experiences (like Devil’s Pool). If you’ve got time, do both. You’ll need your passport to cross, but it’s worth every stamp.
Walk the Knife-Edge
This narrow bridge walk on the Zambian side takes you face-to-face with the thunder. It’s wild. It’s wet. It’s wonderful. Especially during high water season when the mist soaks you in seconds. Pack a poncho, and thank us later.
Brave Devil’s Pool
Only open during low water season (roughly August to December), Devil’s Pool is not your average swim. Here, you float right up to the lip of the Falls — yes, the actual edge. It’s not for everyone, but if it’s for you, it’s a story you’ll never stop telling.
Hike to the Boiling Pot
A lesser-known gem. This steep trail winds down into the gorge below the Falls. It’s quiet, breathtaking, and often completely yours. Bring water, good shoes, and curiosity.
Don’t skip lunch in Livingstone
After a morning of mist and marvel, stop in town for a bite. We love The Royal Livingstone for riverside elegance, or Café Zambezi for a laid-back, flavour-packed local meal.
What to pack
Comfortable walking shoes
Breathable layers (mornings can be fresh)
Rain gear — the Falls are generous with their spray
Waterproof bag for phones and cameras
Swimsuit (for Devil’s Pool or our pool)
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat
Insect repellent
Binoculars — for birds, monkeys, and the odd elephant
And of course, a sense of adventure
When to visit
March – May: High water, high drama. The Falls are in full thunder. Expect mist, power, and awe.
August – December: Low water season brings clearer views, rock formations, and access to Devil’s Pool.
June – July: A sweet spot. Still plenty of flow, but more visibility. Many say it’s the best of both.
A few hidden gems we love
Victoria Falls Bridge Walk: Part history tour, part adrenaline rush. You can even bungee.
Livingstone Museum: Stories, science, and local legends all under one roof.
Zambezi Sunset Cruise: Launch from the lodge. Elephants, hippos, and golden light as a guarantee.

Coming home to Zambezi Dusk
After a day chasing mist and marvels, there’s nothing like coming back to the stillness of the river. The fire’s lit. The drinks are cold. The hippos are… vocal. And you get to take it all in from your deck, your bath, or your seat at dinner.
Our team is always here to help — whether you want to book activities, map out a full day, or just chat about our favourite view. We know this place, and we love nothing more than sharing it.
In the end...
Victoria Falls isn’t something you tick off a list. It’s something you feel. You’ll hear it before you see it. You’ll carry it long after you leave. And if you’re looking for a soulful base to explore it all — somewhere peaceful, beautiful, and brimming with character — we’d love to have you with us.
Let the river slow you down.
Let the wild wake you up.
And if you need help planning your adventure, just reach out — we’re right here, where the water runs deep and the stories run even deeper.
The end! Thanks for reading!
